Five years after the release of its predecessor, but Sony has finally launched the much-hyped and immensely anticipated A7S (III) of the company as the premier low-light, and video in a consumer camera.
The A7S series, it was first launched in 2014, with the S standing for sensitivity. The original A7S, and the A7S II to 2015, have been designed to be the absolute king of the dynamic range and low light performance with their 12MP full frame sensor. However, a lot of users who do more of their video performances, which makes them much sought-after by a video camera. With the A7S, III, Sony has fully embraced the video aspects, that is, to everyone, as well as improving the low-light and dynamic range performance.
The new Sony A7S, the III comes with a new 12MP backside illuminated EXMOR R back-illuminated CMOS full-frame sensor. It is the combination of the relatively low resolution and a relatively large sensor, which makes these cameras so good in low light. There is also a new RECORD-XR image processor, with 8 times more computing power than the A7S II.
So, what can these two do? For starters, the camera has an ISO range of 40-409,600. Sony also claims an impressive 15+ stops of dynamic range, and a 3x reduction in rolling shutter. The camera is able to shoot down a relatively modest 10 fps in burst shooting mode, but the buffer is so large that it is capable of shooting up to 1000 consecutive uncompressed RAW shooting with full AF/AE tracking, before you run out of it. The A7S-III can also shoot in the HEIF-size, with a large dynamic range (HLG), and a 10-bit gradation.
However, you will most likely be here to see the video specs, so here they are. Up to 4K resolution at 120p, 10-bit, 4:2:2 All Intra-shot in-house. You can also record in 4K at 60p is a 16-bit RAW, and external to the plug-in to the full-sized HDMI on the side.
The A7S-III supports S-Gamut and S-Gamut 3 and S-Gamut3.Cinema color profiles to make it easy to change the color to match the A7S (III footage to that of other canon cameras. There is also a new XAVC-GS-size format with the H. 265 codec is more efficient. There is no limit on the record, and it is the only crop in the maximum of 4K-120p setting, and all of the other modes, using the full width of the sensor.
In order to help with the videos and pictures is a new focus system. The new phase-detection AF is used with 759 points, which cover 92% of the world. You will get real-time tracking and real-time view to maintain a lock on the subject. The performance has always been a sore point with the previous one A7S the camera’s contrast-detection systems, so it’s good to see that this is a proof.
The A7S ii has the 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system. In this work, it is best to go with the lenses you have, the IBIS, and in gimbals, but it is particularly useful for lenses without stabilization.
Sony also has a new viewfinder for the A7S II. It is claimed to be the world’s first electronic VIEWFINDER with a 0.64 type, 9.44-million-dot OLED panel. The 3.0-inch 1.44-million-dot monitor at the back, it is now a fully rotatable touch screen, which is a first for a Sony A7 camera.
Even more important, perhaps, is that Sony has now refreshed its entire UI. Gone are the complex horizontal system with the pages upon pages of menus. The new layout makes use of the vertical tab of the design that stacks on top of one another, and if you go down to a whole new level. Also, the UI is completely touch based and you can make use of the touch screen to select and scroll through the menu.
Finally, the A7S, the III uses a dual-lock design that is able to accept the SDXC/SDHC memory card or the CFexpress the cards in each slot. You can choose to view the video or images in both slots at the same time, and you can also use the relay mode, and to switch from one card while the camera is writing data to the other, so, in essence, infinite storage in a single file.
There is still a lot more to this camera, but suffice it to say that this is by far one of the best and most complete consumer camera on the market for a mirrorless compact body. The 12MP resolution is not the sensation of a professional photographer, but it should be good enough for the majority of the video is with everything else in this price range is outdated.
So, what’s the price? The A7S-III is $3500 for the body, and it will be on sale at the end of September. For the price, this is as close as you can get for a cinema camera.
